When you look at me, I’m blonde and blue-eyed, but I grew up between two cultures. My Mom’s family was German, my Dad’s Dutch. One country felt rigid and structured like the earth, the other fluid like the ocean. They had different histories, spoke a different language, and had different world views. My great-grandmother emigrated with 8 of her 12 children to Brazil. I have many darker-skinned cousins. They are family and I love them. We’re all made of skin and blood. Our hearts beat the the same rhythm. When will we be a nation with liberty and justice for all?
