Five Wishes

Maria Elena is a lonely young woman, resentful of the disrespect she experiences at home. She is growing up in a barrio, in poverty, without any of the rights most of us take for granted, such as having enough to eat or getting an education. The violence she experiences at a young age creates deep-rooted scars, both physically and emotionally.

Maria Elena has heartfelt desires of living a different life, one that would afford her to go to college and live in a nice, safe neighborhood. Never does she imagine that her life could take a turn for the worse, but it does.

Living in the streets, she fends for herself amidst gang members with little concern for her well-being. Without her belief in a lucky star, her life would be unbearable.

One day she meets Lolita, who grew up on the opposite, rich side of town, and is positive, cheerful and resourceful. They become best friends. Lolita has desires of her own and convinces Maria Elena that a new start in L.A. is not only achievable, but will also make all their wishes come true. Lolita has the connections that make the fulfilment of their dreams palpable, except that they must put their lives and trust in Tío, a man Maria Elena deeply despises.

In spite of her misgivings, Maria Elena joins Lolita and escapes her non-promising, futureless life, only to end up in a foreign country alone, hungry, and scared.
